Random chart - CEO compensation

"The policy of limiting the deductibility of even performance-based pay for CEOs has much to make it worthy of recommendation. Evidence strongly indicates that performance-based pay is not an efficiency enhancing institution that should be given preferential treatment in the tax code, so ending this preferential treatment is the rare provision in the TCJA that seems to make some economic sense. Further, ending the performance-based pay deductibility will raise a modest amount of revenue to roughly $9 billion per year (Balsam 2012).

However, this analysis finds little evidence that ending the deductibility of performance-based pay will significantly affect the trajectory of CEO pay. We find no evidence that the provision of the ACA limiting the deductibility of CEO pay for insurers had any effect in reducing CEO compensation. This would tend to support the view that CEO pay is determined much more by the power of CEOs in corporate decision-making than the returns they generate for shareholders since the change in tax treatment unambiguously raised the cost of CEO pay to the companies that employ them. This also suggests that efforts to rein in CEO pay by limiting deductibility more generally, as was done in the Tax Cut and Jobs Act of 2017, will not be effective. In order to limit CEO pay it may be necessary to alter the rules of corporate governance in ways that increase the power of shareholders over the CEO. This assessment must be qualified by the fact that our sample included a relatively small number of firms over a span of just four years"

Gemini - first look

Today the Gemini I backed on Indiegogo was delivered! As soon as I was home I unboxed it and plugged in in to charge!

And my accessories:

For comparisons re size, thickness, etc., here is the Gemini alongside a Sony Tablet P, the venerable HP 200lx, a Cool Bphone, a Sharp Zaurus SL-C3000 (my current workhorse), a HTC U11 (my current cell phone), and a Nokia Communicator E90:

Here's are some pictures of the Gemini with a GPD Win and a UMID M1:

I currently use a combination of a HTC U11 cell phone and Sharp Zaurus PDA. The Zaurus dethroned the venerable HP 200lx I had used for years, but it is getting very old, I've had one model or another for fifteen or sixteen years, starting with the SL-C700. Over that period of time I've tried almost everything that has come out but have always gone back to the Zaurus despite its lack of connectivity! Size, weight, form factor, instant on, productivity applications such as IQNotes, Portabase, InforManager, etc. have keep it as my go-to daily 'second brain.'

Will the Gemini dethrone it and take over? Will I be able to go from two devices down to one? We'll know in the next few weeks or months!

eBeam Smartpen - first look

Received and unboxed the eBeam Smartpen that I had backed on Indiegogo... (I bought a yellow and a red one).

Plugged it in to charge up... I downloaded the eBeam Note app from Google Play and it showed how to use the item (not real obvious from the anemic paper "manual" that came in the box).

Started the app, it discovered my pen, I connected, then gave a quick try. Added the sensor to some paper and then wrote something random:

The result? Quite amazing fidelity given how bad my handwriting is! OK, so that's all I'm trying for now.  It does have many additional capabilities - you can synchronize your notes with OneNote, Dropbox, or Google Drive; you can share the notes via email or other apps; you can edit them; and you can also convert your notes to text.

In addition there are two other apps - eBeam Keyboard and eBeam Meeting - that further extend the capabilities. The first allows you to chat, etc; the second allows you to share and collaborate with others - you can invite and share with others in real time and authorize other meeting participants to annotate the notes.

I tried the conversion to text for the above, the result wasn't that great, but given the quality of the handwriting it actually didn't seem that bad!

Random charts- West Bank

"A complex series of concrete walls, electronic fences, and other obstacles to control Palestinian pedestrian and vehicular movement. Palestinian access to land and communities located behind the Barrier is subject to a permit or prior coordination regime. In its 2004 Advisory Opinion, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) established that the sections of the Barrier which run inside the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, together with the associated gate and permit regime, violate Israel’s obligations under international law."
