Not content with letting the facts speak for themselves, some are trying to leverage existing differences and/or animosities to
embellish the facts, presumably to get a better reaction and/or more support from the "west" i.e. United States, U.K., Europe, etc. A couple of memes that have circulated and continue to circulate:
- Forces or countries inimical to the U.S. are portrayed as the only ones who have rushed to congratulate Ahmedinajad on his re-election. You know who, the 'usual suspects' - Hamas, Hezbollah, Syria, North Korea, Cuba, Venezuela, Russia, China, etc. Proof, were it needed that they are all a bunch of "thugs." Unfortunately for this meme a number of leaders who are classified as "friendlies" (for example, Turkish President Gul and Prime Minister Erdogan) also congratulated Ahmedinajad; as well as a number of U.S. "clients", including Hamid Karzai (Afghanistan), Jalal Talabani (Iraq), Fouad Siniora (Lebanon), and President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilan (Pakistan)...
- Rumors and tweets abound that various countries/external forces have supplied manpower to help the Iranian authorities crack down on the protestors (e.g. see below). Again, the "usual suspects" are fingered e.g. "arabs", Chechens, Hamas, (Lebanese) Hezbollah, Syria, and (again) Venezuela... Some of this could be from Iranians who are loath to believe that their countrymen are willing to engage in the violence against them, but it's also another example of embellishing by leveraging existing prejudices and animosities to strengthen the message....
